'Depression is well known. It is considered the "common cold of psychiatry". This inocuous analogy belittles the deadliness of some depressions. We want to examine: what it is that makes us vulnerable; what encourages and maintains depression in women; and ways in which we can protect ourselves.'
Why do so many women suffer from depression? How can we defend ourselves against this common problem and get out of what can quickly become a vicious circle? Gerrilyn Smith and Kathy Nairne, both clinical psychologists, draw on their extensive professional experience, together with the experiences of a wide range of women sufferers, to offer this urgently needed and comprehensive guide to dealing with depression. Here is all the step-by-step information needed to:
• Identify the causes of depression
• understand the many forms depression can take
• Explore different ways of coping and recovering
• Evaluate the help available, including the good and bad points of 'alternative' remedies
Dealing with Depression is an accessible and essential resource book for anyone who has experienced depression, either in themselves or in others.
